Resolutions + Intentions




Neither is better than the other but rather when we use both combined true magic happens.


Resolutions focus more on the external outcome rather than the internal journey.


Intentions challenge us to go inwards with awareness of our own personal growth.

Once we accept ourselves as imperfect beings and realize that trying to please everyone is a fucking joke, life gets a little brighter. Everyone has a story they are living and everyone has skeletons in their closet, but the past does not define you. What defines you now are your choices moving forward.


I'm going to introduce you to a phrase I have adopted into my daily life. This phrase is compassionate detachment- treating others with love and respect while not taking responsibility for their emotional immaturity or poor choices. These words reshaped my relationships with myself and others. I went a little deeper into the meaning of this phrase myself. I see compassionate-detachment as having love and respect for others regardless of the choices that they feel they must make in their life. Allow yourself to step into their shoes and understand their choice from their perspective without letting that decision affect your own sense of self worth. If something good comes into your life, let it in. If something chooses to leave, let it leave. Allow yourself to be in a state of flow with the universe and the choices it presents you with. The choices in every moment are up to you, the result is your life story.


The "New Year" is known as a time for shedding the old layers of ourselves and embracing a new beginning. As we enter into this new year and continue to navigate our own journeys, it's a good time to start thinking about fresh resolutions and intentions and incorporating them into your daily life. Setting resolutions allows us to take the time to visualize the "bigger picture" of our dreams coming into fruition. Setting intentions helps us to tune into the smaller steps and goals of the daily routines that will help make those dreams achievable.


Three steps to making new habits easier to achieve

  1. Start Small - Don't overwhelm yourself by making too drastic of a change or taking on too much and not reaching your goal. Start small and work your way up with smaller more reachable daily goals. If you want to start working out more but a 5am work out seems a bit extreme, try starting with a short walk after dinner or a sunset stroll.

  2. Habit Stacking - Building a new habit can be difficult. So try integrating a new desired habit by stacking it onto an existing habit that is already part of your routine. For example, if you would like to drink more water, leave a bottle of water by your coffee maker in the morning and practice drinking water while your coffee brews. If you want to work out more, every-time you leave your house do 20 squats. If you want to get into meditation, meditate first thing in the morning right when you wake up. Sit up and take 2 min, 5 min even 10 min or as long as possible and connect with your breath and just observe yourself.

  3. Habit Loop - Going back to the habit stacking above, we can use an existing habit that we already do and stack a new habit we want to incorporate. Like a lunch break, most of us take lunch everyday. If we want to start moving our bodies more we could start by taking a 20 minuet walk or jog at lunch and then having a smoothie as a reward for the 20 minutes of movement. Having a simple cue-and-reward system helps you to feel good about the achievement and better inspires us to stay on track.

These are some great ways to get you started on your new set of resolutions and intentions for 2021! Take some time to write our your own resolutions and intentions for the year ahead and check back often to make sure you are staying on track and not overwhelming yourself. If you fall off course, THATS OKAY! Every day is a new opportunity to refocus and redirect if needed. The plans may change but the goal remains the same!
